Types of ceramic tiles
Many people, when deciding on the choice of roofing material, are thinking about buying ceramic tiles. They enjoy a justifiably good opinion both due to their very high strength and resistance to external conditions, and thanks to a wide range of products, including not only various shapes, but also surface finishing. A roof with laid tiles will look very good, regardless of the shape of the building or the type of facade. Why should I choose ceramic tiles?
Ceramic tiles are one of the oldest types of durable roofing, which in various forms was known in almost all cultures from ancient Mesopotamia to the Inca Empire. Although the technology of firing tiles and its finish have changed significantly over the centuries, the quality is still determined primarily by the appropriate selection of materials - noble clay, the addition of minerals and modifying substances with a small amount of melafir or quartz sand. Thanks to the grinding and mixing of ingredients, followed by drying and two-stage firing, the finished tile can achieve durability that allows it to be operated for decades. The use of ceramic tiles is still very popular, and the roof made of it is considered extremely elegant and prestigious. In addition to high strength and attractive appearance, the use of tiles is supported by its good operational parameters. The tile supplied by a proven manufacturer will differ in a small water absorption, so it is not subject to cracking, and also becomes relatively resistant to contamination. The appropriate finish guarantees good protection against so-called biological corrosion.Their large weight is also important for the durability of the roof covered with ceramic tiles. Although the heavy weight of the material means the need to make a sufficiently strong roof truss, it is also associated with better protection from very strong winds. Heavy roofing materials are easier to withstand a strong wind rise caused by strong gusts of wind from the downwind side. Due to the specific method of fixing the tile and its relatively small size, the probability of its damage during severe weather events is much lower. The great advantage of shingles is a wide variety of shapes . We produce both classic types of tiles that reflect traditions, and designs that are better adapted to the shapes of more modern buildings. The tile is also offered in various finishes, which affects not only its appearance, but also its functional properties.Types of tiles by shape
There are many types of tiles that differ in their shape. In addition to the classic models related to historical types of ceramic tiles and models inspired by them, there are a large number of products on sale, the shape or color of which are the result of regional traditions, as well as those that have been developed for various specific solutions, for example, roofs with a slight slope.
To cover the roof, two types of tiles are used with a slightly different shape and different rounding. Flatter elements are laid in the lower layer so that a bulge forms on the upper side, and two adjacent tiles are covered with a more rounded tile, bulge upwards. This type of coating is usually used on historic buildings or in their surroundings. Another type of tile is the traditional flat tile . In this case, we are dealing with one element, the shape of which resembles carp scales. This type of tile is quite narrow and is well suited for covering roofs with a more complex design. Ordinary tiles can be laid both in the so-called husk and the so-called lace. When laying "in the husk", successive horizontal rows of tiles are shifted relative to each other. Laying "lace" means that the two rows form a single whole — the lower one is slightly lowered and shifted relative to the upper one. The following are mounted below, at a distance resulting from the length of the tile. The classic tile is also a Dutch tile, the so–called essay. These tiles are S-shaped and stacked in such a way that the convex part of one tile overlaps the concave part of the other.A slightly less common type of tile is Marseille tile, in which special overlaps are made, thanks to which it is possible to connect adjacent tiles in such a way that their special profiles touch each other, eliminating the risk of leaks. This principle is used in most modern tiles with so - called locks . Single tiles laid on all sides, the tightness of the roof is much greater. The use of locks works especially well in the recently fashionable flat tiles, which perfectly combines with modern design.Types of tiles for surface finishing
Tiles differ from each other not only in shape, but also in the way of surface finishing. It largely determines their appearance, and also affects a number of functional features. The most traditional type of tile is natural tile, which is created during the firing process and is not additionally processed. The most characteristic features of natural tiles are rather uneven coloring, even among elements from the same batch. This is due to the different pigment content in the raw clay and is not corrected in any way during the production process. Another feature of natural tiles is that it has a matte and slightly more rough surface, so it is more susceptible to contamination and fouling.Another way to finish tiles is angobirovanie. In this case, the dried and pre-fired tile is then coated with a special mixture of dye and clay and fired again. Thanks to this process , you can precisely control the color of the tile . This method of production makes it possible to obtain products that are almost uniform in color, and at the same time those whose surface is smoother than that of natural tiles. This usually means less cleaning of the angobed tiles, greater resistance to fouling and a slightly higher gloss. The tile with the most characteristic appearance and "glow" is a glazed tile. In this case, the tile is also produced in several stages – similar to the application of angob, a coating consisting of clay and dye is applied to the pre-fired tile, but silicon is added to this mixture. At high temperature, the glaze layer undergoes vitrification, and the surface becomes very smooth and shiny. Glazed tiles are recommended where the building is particularly susceptible to biological corrosion and covering with moss or lichen. This solution will also work well near trees, when leaves, needles or fragments of branches may fall on the roof slope. dosug56
